It’s easy to assume that food is the quickest way to win over a dog. But for many animals who have faced neglect or uncertainty, connection matters more than anything else. A gentle touch or kind presence can speak louder than any reward. That idea takes center stage in a video of a blind shelter dog whose response surprised even experienced rescuers.

Video shows blind shelter dog hides under blanket, wants affection and gets a name

The video, shared on Instagram by dog rescuer Rocky Kanaka, begins with a moment that nearly didn’t happen. As Kanaka walks through a shelter documenting animals, he pauses at a kennel he admits he almost skipped. A blanket covers most of the space, and at first glance, it appears empty.

On-screen text reads: “I Almost Walked Right Past Him, What Was Under the Blanket Broke Me.” Curious, Kanaka takes a closer look and discovers a dog tucked underneath. The pup, he explains, is both blind and senior. He has been at the shelter for two weeks and, surprisingly, hasn’t even been given a name. More concerning, no one had come forward asking about him.

Kanaka enters the kennel and gently begins interacting with the dog. He offers treats, but what stands out is the dog’s response. Instead of focusing on the food, the pup repeatedly licks Kanaka’s hand, seeking contact more than anything else. According to Kanaka, this behavior is common among deaf and blind dogs, who often rely on touch to understand and connect with the people around them.

The camera briefly focuses on the dog’s eyes, showing visible cataracts that explain his blindness. Despite his condition, the dog remains calm and receptive, leaning into the attention he’s receiving.

Kanaka then begins discussing possible names for the dog with a shelter attendant. When the name “Larry” is mentioned, the dog’s ears subtly perk up. They repeat the name a few times, and each time, the dog seems to respond more attentively.

Taking it as a sign, Kanaka decides the dog has found his identity. By the end of the video, he refers to him as “a distinguished old gentleman named Larry,” giving the once-overlooked pup both recognition and dignity.
